This stoneware sculpture radiates theatricality, sensuality and the divine feminine – a playful tribute to some of the many forms that femininity takes. It’s rich in symbolism, even if it emerged intuitively. The glossy red glazed tulip, the index fingers framed with frills and the painted nail polish celebrate femininity as something that can be soft, strong, elegant, natural and extravagant all at once.
The tiny naked ancient goddess figure, cradled by the bloom and being unapologetically herself, evokes an image of fertility with her lactating bosom – she could be about the essence of feminine power or a Goddess of nurturing.
Red tulips are associated with true love and deep devotion.
The string of pale turquoise pearls is an adornment that hints at easy self-expression and clear feminine communication.
Working our way down we see a golden or bronze sphere in the middle, a shape that suggests wholeness, unity and enlightenment.
The upper part of this sculpture is supported by three index fingers, each more like a leg with the addition of a flamboyant red frill – a nod to the spectacle of cheeky showgirls. The index finger is the symbol of guidance, direction and command, often used when making a statement – just like a performer commanding her audience. The frills transform the feel of this sculpture into something theatrical, celebratory, almost like it’s saying, “Ta-da!”
At the base, grounding it all, is a pale turquoise tetrahedron, a symbol of stability and the foundations upon which the entire sculpture intertwines sensation with something a little deeper.
I’d like you to bring your own interpretations to the understanding of this piece, while experiencing its overall surreal presence.
