Verdant Reverie captures a quiet, dream-like moment framed by gently turning monstera leaves. The camera drifts unhurriedly through a garden of unfolding, kaleidoscopic foliage and vivid blooms, drawing the eye toward its centre, where a small, alluring figure moves in slow harmony with the sea. It’s a meditation on effortless beauty, motion, and the soft pull of the natural world.

About this artistic video
The idea
I initially made this as a clip for VJing with. I wanted to show it to the model. In the process I opened out the clip to it’s full 54 seconds duration and added this sublime audio track by Mix Amylo and behold, another little art video piece was born.
The music
Mix Amylo is a fabulously talented composer, writer and artist from the UK, now living and working in Europe. We’re both really enjoying putting out our A/V collaborations – maybe we’ll even get to play live together one day?
This short piece of music came about while recording with a violinist friend of mine (who wishes to remain anonymous). I had already recorded the piano, and asked her to play one long note multiple times, using the different tones of her instrument; sometimes she played forcefully with a richer sound, sometimes softly and tentatively so the effect is more delicate. The music shifts into a different key for a moment, then returns to the original harmonies, and I asked her to improvise using some different notes over the whole thing. Once I had several tracks of her playing, I added lots of reverb to let the notes float, melded them and arranged them into this finished soundscape. Although it has a hypnotic air of stillness, to me the music also has a sense of underlying and evolving energy, mirroring the flourishing flowers and leaves around the girl, with the repeated note holding down the sound just as her central figure stays rooted in the water as everything moves around her. The leaf
I make journey’s especially to shoot the things I love – plants, people, places, moments. This piece grew from three such memories: The outer layer is a leaf from my thriving monstera plant – even though I didn’t have to travel far for that clip, the journey was to obtain this sought after plant and to keep it alive.
The garden – Jardin Cerromimbre
The rectangular layer was shot this year when I took a trip to the south of Spain, knowing I’d be wandering through my dear friend Gareth Lister’s lush, high-mountain garden in the Sierra Nevada. Gareth’s garden is an act of devotion and his planting is inspirational. He works alongside nature by enhancing it rather than trying to tame it. You can see his photographs here: Jardin Cerromimbre.
The figure
The subtle central focus of this piece was from a time when I was with my dearest and oldest girlfriends friends and their daughters. We went on holiday together and spent our days floating in a warm, luminous Mediterranean sea. These scenes are reminders of how deeply generous life can be, and how easily wonders reveal themselves when we pause long enough to notice.
