What I make

I make high-fired, feminine ceramic forms and give them high-ranking titles – Goddess, Queen and Duchess. I like contrasts – rough and smooth textures, matte and shiny glazes, and geometric shapes juxtaposed with organic forms. I work with cast body parts like fingers and bottoms, and I’m also inspired by what I see on my roof terrace container garden – leaves, flowers and slugs.

Intention

I construct sculptures that look like they could topple over or fall apart – they don’t, though, because I’m good at structure. Sometimes my sculptures look like they’ve been recently unearthed from an archaeological dig, sometimes they’re surreal, and sometimes they’re vessels of sorts. Each piece informs the next.

The creative process

Through play, I allow the clay to form into something recognisable – sometimes this takes ages and I keep building blindly, trusting the creative process. I follow my hands, discarding intrusions from the analytical side of my brain. I construct with slabs and enjoy the surprise of something new.

Glazing

I layer glazes that I’ve made from scratch, tweaking colours and textures, testing new combinations every firing. I blow, brush, pour and splash the glaze on, leaving windows of bare clay so you can see the clay body beneath.
