Lately, I’ve had a thing for monstera leaves and these new monstera leaf bowls, made of glazed stoneware clay, are inspired by the joy I feel as my monstera plant bounces back from the brink of death – greener, stronger and even a bit more fabulous than before. Every new leaf that unfurls gives me ridiculous amounts of joy – it’s like a little green miracle every time. Naturally, this joy found its way into my artwork.

You’ll be able to see them at my next arty event, where they’ll sit alongside sculpture, painting and video – all bound together by the same monstera leaf theme. I love it when a subject spills across different mediums and ties everything together.

Glaze story

Now, a confession: I actually had to glaze these bowls twice. The first attempt was not quite good enough in my eyes – the glaze wasn’t made for brushing and the finish looked, well, not exactly exhibition-worthy. Firing twice is not really advisable though because it put the piece under a lot of stress and it can crack or come apart. But armed with my growing glaze chemistry knowledge, I tweaked the recipe, made it brush-able, and the second firing turned out beautifully. With ceramic glazes there’s a fair share of disappointments but also there’s a deep satisfaction in getting the alchemy right.

Are they practical? Not particularly. Monstera leaf bowls are terrible at holding small things. But they’re beautiful, bold and have a certain tropical charm. You can put them outside, keep them in your bathroom or have them hang around long enough waiting for something unexpected to nestle inside.

Pretty Useless?
