Introducing the Orifice Bowl – a playful new stoneware bowl fresh from my studio.

I’m so pleased with how this form has turned out: the curves, the colour and the suggestive sense of humour it carries. There’s something delightfully cheeky about placing objects in its mouth – whether that’s flowers, pencils, feathers or nothing at all. It stands beautifully on its own.

I created the simple silhouette intentionally, so the focus lands on the new glazes I’ve been developing. The interior is finished with a clear glossy glaze that’s easy to clean, and the high-fired vitrified clay body makes it fully waterproof.

I find the the glaze work really exciting. These recipes are the result of weeks of testing and adjusting. I reworked original recipes using my own locally sourced materials, which behave differently from those mined in North America. I played with the Unity Molecular Formula (UMF), shifted the colourants and fine-tuned the ingredients to improve application. With scales accurate to 0.001g, I’ve been producing countless test tiles – each one bringing me a step closer to understanding these surfaces.
