This stoneware ceramic face hangs on a hook and can go outside.

When I’m on the busy Barcelona metro, all bunched up close together, I scrutinise the facets of people’s features: how the lower part of the nostrils curve, how the bottom lip slopes away. Once I’m back in the studio I work from memory, brutally forming the wet clay into some kind of submission.

It’s always a joy depicting faces – I find them quick to make, unlaboured. Sometimes I make a whole sculpture just to see how the look of the expression will turn out – so I decided to concentrate on just the head this time.

It was a bit of a gamble to glaze her with so many different types of glazes rather than doing something more realistic but I wanted to experiment: opaque pink, transparent chartreuse crackle, turquoise lava, dark green and transparent glossy turquoise.
