This film is about the artist Wes Somerville (RIP). He explains in detail his inspiration, creative process and demonstrates how he made his light sculptures. I pinned Wes down, back in 2020, to talk about his light sculptures and explain his creative process – through a series of interview questions. We get to see under the bonnet of his artwork, as he articulates beautifully where his artwork stems from. We filmed in his art studio in the Alpujarra’s, Southern Spain, and in gallery settings.
Wes and I were friends and had been exhibiting alongside each other for a number of years. I had a collection of footage of his art and I suggested we edit it together, so he could easily illustrate the complexities of his artwork to his wider audience.
A tribute to Wes
A world without Wes feels unreal. I’m so grateful I got to know him. Wes was such a caring and loving person, so much so that it makes me believe in the eternal soul because how can someone as decent as Wes become so wholesome in just one lifetime? We were friends – we both attended the Artist Network Alpujarra artist meetings, exhibited side by side and occasionally worked on projects in the same space. I got to experience his creativity up close – his cooking, his artwork and the quiet, steady kindness that lived in everything he touched. He sought the love out in everyone and everything. He brought the love into the room.
Wise words from Laurie Anderson. She says, “You know why we’re here? To have a good time”.
Wes has had a really good time 💕
I’m gonna miss that stupid smile, so I’ll keep it close and cut everyone some slack, just as he did 😢
