This tiny piece of video art is a one minute duration A/V collaboration with musical composer Mix Amylo.

My music accompanying the beautiful visuals by Emma was made using fragments of violin, recorded in my studio in the summer by a friend, and building up the composition from those haunting phrases. Using just piano and voice, it became a simple, floating soundscape that seems to fit so well with the calming peacefulness of the video.

Mix Amylo

Ethereal is the word that best describes the blissful afternoon I spent last summer filming my friend in a wild swimming spot in Catalunya. We were alone, except for a few darting dragonflies. The video wasn’t rehearsed or planned — she was simply swimming, and I was playing with my new GoPro underwater camera.

She isn’t just in the river; she’s part of it — merging, commanding, relishing. It was so lovely watching her swim, witnessing the unity between her powerful strokes and the spellbinding rawness of nature.

Behind the scenes

Being open to happy accidents is part of the creative process. I was actually in the middle of making a completely different piece of video art, looking for clips to mix, when I noticed how extraordinary this clip is. It grabbed my attention with it’s raw power and beauty and I felt it needed exploring more on it’s own. I love how the splashes become her wings, making her into an angelic form.
